Śrīmad Bhāgavata Saptāham Synopsis / Overview

Even after composing the 18 Puranas, the 18 Upa-puranas, Brahma Sutras as well as Mahabharata, Maharishi Veda Vyasa was dissatisfied. Upon advice of Sage Narada, Maharishi Veda Vyasa composed the Bhāgavatam and attained supreme satisfaction. The word ‘Bhāgavatam’ means “a scripture (shastra) that pertains to the Supreme Lord (Maha Vishnu)”. Consisting of 12 Skandhas or cantos, in which every aspect pertaining to the Supreme Lord (Mahā Vishnu) has been explained in this Mahā- Purāna or the crown jewel of all Purāṇas.

It is considered very sacred when all of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam is heard in one saptāham or 7 continuous days. This 7-day discourse (Saptāham) is a journey through the timeless stories of Lord Krishna’s glory, the power of Bhakti (devotion), and the eternal truths that govern all of our lives.

Included in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam are captivating narrations such as:

• The birth and childhood leelas of Lord Krishna. • The melodious story of Prahlāda and Narasiṁha. • The tale of Dhruva’s unwavering devotion. • The wisdom of Rishabhadeva, Ambarīsha, and Sudāmā. • The soul-liberating episode of Parīkṣit and Sage Śuka.

Key Themes of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam include:

• Devotion (Bhakti): The importance of loving devotion to the Supreme Lord. • Transcendence: The nature of the ultimate reality and the path to liberation (Moksha). • Dharma (Righteousness): Living a life in accordance with spiritual principles. • Karma: The law of cause and effect and its impact on one’s journey. • Incarnations of Vishnu: Stories and significance of the Maha Vishnu’s various avatars, including Krishna and Rama.

Summary of the 10th Skandha or Canto:

Daśama Skandha (10th Canto): Consists of 90 chapters. Key topics include: • The entire Krishna Leela is detailed in the 10th skandha and all the pancha gitams are in this skandha. • The first half (poorvardha) has 49 Chapters and the second half (uttarārdha) has 41 chapters. • This skandha is called the Ashrayam or Refuge. This skandha satisfies the Ashrayam lakshana (characteristic) of a Mahāpurāna. • Even if we don’t read the entire Bhāgavatam, just reading the 10th skandha is enough, like Atmadeva did (whose story is told in Śrīmad Bhāgavata Mahātmyam).
