A collection of 30 stanzas praising Sri Vishnu sung by Sri Goda (Andal) Devi, an incarnation of Sri Bhu Devi.
This chanting is done during the month of Dhanur Masa (Margazhi). It is a part of Divya Prabhanda, a work of twelve Alvars and considered as one of the highest literatures in Tamil. It usually starts mid-December and the vrata is done for 30 days.
Sri Goda Devi began this vrata when she was a little girl to win the love of and marry Sri Vishnu. She succeeded in her mission by doing this vrata. With great devotion, Andal Devi sang one song each day for 30 days while offering a flower garland to Sri Vishnu.
The garland of these 30 songs is called Thiruppavai, where 'Thiru' means holy and 'Pavai' means vrata or penance or vow. These Pasurams are the whole essence of the Vedas and devotees who chant them will be enlightened with knowledge and blessed by the almighty God.
